Thing #18 Online Apps

Google Docs is a really easy to use application that allows the user to import documents and post very easily. Alot of fun also...

Technology Related # 7

It's not as pretty as the iPhone, but the T-Mobile G1, the first smartphone to run Google's sleek new Android operating system, has a slick slide-out keyboard, a big bright screen and a lot of power. The "Google Phone" supports loads of applications downloaded from the online Android marketplace — games and programs, like encyclopedias, guitar-teaching tools and time-wasters like Pac-Man — and easily handles graphics-heavy applications such as Google Maps, Web browsing and video. The Android marketplace isn't as robust as the iPhone app store yet, but someday it will be, as more Android phones hit the market and developers start churning out apps. Price: $179.99, plus monthly service fees More Info: t-mobileg1.com

Thing #23 The end, or the beginning?

What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey?

I loved the YouTube exercise and the online image generators.

How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?

Technology is growing at an unbelievable rate and as a Librarian, it is my job to continue to grow in my knowledge and skills regarding this technology.

Were there any take-aways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?

I was surprised that I enjoyed it so much.

What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?

Since alot of the people I work with are not as tech savvy as myself, it might be a good idea to make the steps on the exercises just a little easier to follow.

And last but not least…

If we offered another discovery program like this in the future, would you again chose to participate?

Definitely!!!

A social bookmarking manager like Del.icio.us is a great way to create bookmarks, not only for your personal use but for helping library patrons with research assistance.

MySpace for Parents Workshop

While working on my SAPL Learns- 23 Things assignment for Week 6, I came across the following blog titled "Youth Tech - MySpace handouts". While checking out the blog I came across a printout titled "MySpace for Parents Workshop". The authors Jesse and Matt (Sr. Library Asst. & Technology Education Librarian respectively) who work for the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, offer an interesting and informative handout concerning facts, links, and information regarding MySpace, geared towards parents of teens. I found it to be very informative and interesting! Check out the handout at http://youthtech.files.wordpress.com/2006/10/myspace-for-parents-brochure.doc

I am scheduled to give a class to parents on "CyberSafety" here at Bazan in January 2009. It might be cool to throw in a little information about MySpace also. What do you think?

I created this image of my dog "Buddy" using an image generator called Big Huge Labs Motivator. It was super easy to create this motivational poster. It allows the creator to pick Fonts, title, subtitle and colors. Pretty cool ay?

NAMING YOUR BAND

Naming your band is a very important decision, for a number of reasons. First of all, your band is your brand, and having a memorable or interesting name might give you a slight edge in a very saturated market. Also, it’s important to ensure that nobody else is using your name already, as this can lead to legal troubles should you ever rise to prominence later on. But if you’re stuck in a creative rut trying to come up with that memorable moniker, here are a couple of suggestions...

Try Some Anagram Magic
If you want to mix things up, why not try this useful online anagram tool? Simply enter your name into the box and it will shuffle the letters into a list of viable anagrams. Unless your name is Bono, there’s bound to be a few gems coming out the other end.
http://wordsmith.org/anagram/index.html

I am quite pleased to note that ‘Dan Foley’ generates such delights as ‘Day Felon’, ‘Anode Fly’ and ‘Leafy Nod’. The anagram generator also had success with ‘Canabrism’ - this seed provided ‘Brain Scam’, ‘Mars Cabin’ and the reassuringly noble ‘Ban Racism’.

Searching For A Band Name
Over on the Linkdisco site you can find some suggestions about using Web search to find a band name. This technique is well worth considering because it can reveal a name that not only is interesting but also valuable in terms of search traffic. And who wouldn’t want to be in a band that’s popular before it even exists? http://linkdisco.com/bandname-research
